ON PANES OF AESTHETIC DEATH
Double glazing keeps out the cold, but it ruins a good facade - or does it?

Steve and Karen Tomlin couldn't bring themselves to use uPVC when overhauling the windows of their dilapidated, 1882 red brick terrace house in St Albans. "We wanted to put back a double glazed version of the original sash windows which have a modern spiral balance instead of old fashioned ropes and weights". They were made and fitted (with two of the eight not opening) for £3.500 by Court Davis Joinery.

Glazing Costs:
to supply and fit double glazing for a 4ft by 3ft sash window, Anglian Windows would charge about £590 (using uPVC with a 16mm air gap), for a similar size Court Davis Joinery would charge about £700 using wood with a 10mm air gap.
